Was wondering if fresh eggs are good for horses. I have heard they help the coats, but was wondering if anyone uses them. I feed beet pulp (wet) and it would be very easy to add them to it. We have lots of hens running around and I have an Easter Hunt daily

: but have way too many eggs for us, but not enough to sell. Anyone know??

I remember someone said on here once that eggs were not good for any animal, however, my husband is pretty good friends with our vet, and he's seen our vet cracking a raw egg on top of his horses feed.

I don't think that a vet would do anything to harm his own horses, but then again everyone has different opinions on things!

I know there was a very famous racehorse named Pebbles (either from England or Ireland) who ate several raw eggs -- and a pint of Guinness -- daily. She won a Breeders' Cup back in the 1980's.

I can't remember that Arabian's horses name but there was an Arabian mare that ate one egg a day for like 25 years.. something like that 9,500 eggs sure didn't seem to be for her at all :bgrin

I have a friend that has given his quarter horses raw eggs for years. He does a lot of showing and his horses have the shiniest and most beautiful coats. He has done this for as long as I know him which is about 25 years, his horses do well in halter classes. He has never had any problems with feeding the eggs, this is a daily part of their diet.

When I asked about this on the Forum once before, I was reminded of the danger of salmonella, so it scared me and I have not fed raw eggs, since.

I do remember this question came up last year and it was the first I had ever heard of it. Personally? I wouldn't feed my horses eggs. I realize other people may do it, but I wouldn't. There are some terrific products that are GREAT for skin and coat - my 2 favorites have been stablized rice bran and BOSS.

Good luck,

Liz R.

I had a horse contract a type of bacteria similar to Salmonella, it was very scary and the horse was extremely sick. Miraculously she pulled out of it and is fine. I thank a very good vet for that one. However, as was just brought out, raw eggs can be asource of this bacteria and I would not suggest feeding them to any mammal.

On a second note, horses are not carnivorous, they are herbivorous and eat vegetation not meat. I just dont think it is a good idea but hey, to each his own. I just would not do it.

Biotin

Under the word "Avidin" it talks about how Avidin depleats Biotin from a horse. If you fed eggs you would need to supplement this.

As for the salmonella, when feeding the eggs straight from the shell with it not sitting around, you have very little chance for salmonella. Salmonella usually occurs after the item has been left sitting, allowing time for the bacteria to develop. When feeding the eggs though, you would have to watch out for any "leftovers" that stuck to the bowl.

That's funny that you mention that - I was just reading an article the other day about horses eating meat, and yes - they will. There's been many cases of horses chasing down a critter, killing it and then eating it. Some suggest it is the salt in the blood that they like. In Iceland farmers feed salted fish as a mineral/salt supplement in the winter. Salted herring has lots of selenium in it too. I'll stick with my powder supplement though.

As far as the egg goes - people also eat raw eggs. Let me know if they like it - I too have too many eggs to eat myself and always end up giving them away or throwing them out.

When we bred and raised quarter horses, we also had lots of chickens. I use to mix 1 egg in with my stallions first meal of the day! He was as healthy as a horse!! He also looked great!!

Never thought about giving them to my minis as I don't have chickens now.

Yes they will eat meat, my Shetland Pony would fight me over a Sausage McMuffin~! And of course I cam him some :bgrin And french fries, and tator chips, and even a cheese burger.. How about that Patches the Pony in the video, that goes to fast food places in the back seat of that convertible and eats his own Cheeseburger~!! Patches

Oh, wow, that video is hilarious! It does scare me a little bit to see that horse riding around in a convertible though without a seatbelt.

I've known people that feed eggs to horses. It is a protein source, and if you read the book Nutrition in the Horse - there are lots of things we don't feed horses in the USA, that are fed elsewhere.

Dates, potatoes, silage, green chop, sugar cane, honey, turnips & winter carrots, beer, eggs, day-old bread and coconut are routinely fed in other countries.

Now which is the best nutritionally for a horse - I would defer to Robin Cole on that! She knows light years more than I do about feeding a mini!
