Got a phonecall today from the vet clinic concerning Frostys' necropsy results. Anyway she did not have any contagious diseases. Her intestines were not right, they had kinks in them causing the food to take longer to get to her system. Thus the reason for her being so tiny. Anyway over time it caused a blockage which was only food hard as a rock, no worms, etc. The blockage caused pain thus the reason for her rapid heart rate and heavy breathing and she felt a bit less pain when she was on pain meds, then when she showed colic symptoms my vet tubed her with oil, she was alright for a few days but the blockage was so big and hard that it ruptured her intestines and she died from the toxin going into her system.

Oh so sorry, but at least now you have an answer and does not sound like anything that could have been prevented.... and due to the way her intestines were, was an 'accident waiting to happen' eventually. No one would have ever known. At least you can rest knowing it was also nothing contagious, and nothing you did wrong. Poor girl- so sorry for your loss, and so many times there is no answer as to what or why. Hugs for you.

Thanks. The vet clinic said there was no way I could have known or prevented it and even had she gone for surgery she probably still would not have made it due to the amount of kinks and the size of her. I just wish I had known then as I would not have made her suffer and would have put her down. The only good thing is it is not contagious which I am greatful for.

I'm so sorry Shana. That is so sad.

Anything can happen with these horses. All we can do is our best and to keep learning.....

I personally know the pain your little Frosty was in as I had a ruptured intestine. I know she was still in pain even with the pain meds. You can take comfort in the fact she has no more pain and will be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge.

Shana,

I am again so sorry for your loss. What a relief that you were able to get some answers and now know the true source of her troubles. Hugs to you,

Yes I am relieved but still sad. I miss Frosty but do have her half-sister, sire and dam here. I just bought her sire, Iles Spotted Fever and he is such a cuddle bug. Frostys' half sister looks a lot like her but is 32" at 7 months and Frosty was only 24" at 6 months so a huge difference in size. My other 4 weanlings are all smaller than this new filly. I even have two 2 year olds and a 3 year old mare that are smaller than her. I think she'll be about 36" at maturity but I don't mind as I like the taller A and smaller B minis.
