We knew the weather was supposed to be bad, they said a storm coming in from the west. So us four smart girls decided we wouldn't stay overnight, instead, we'd just go for the llama's and donkeys, miss the goats and rest of the exotics as we would beat the storm. Everyone knows, SD is west of WI so if we left by 3, we could outrun any old storm! So we enjoyed the sale, the two jennys I was waiting for came in at the end of the donkeys, instead of leading them in, she ran them in. OMG, long hooves, but these jennys were nice and well bred but I didn't bid because of the situation. I asked what she wanted for them and she said $1800 each!
: I asked her if they lead, she said she didn't know!
: How can you not know if your own donkeys lead! :new_shocked: If she wanted that kind of money, why not groom them and lead them in, in a good, presentable way, maybe even a show halter. The animals were handled very roughly by the ring people, they'd pick a donkeys back end up and shove it out the door and slam the big metal door on it. They had a brat kid in the ring, about 10 or 12 that took great joy in kicking and hitting the animals for no reason. We all wanted to go down there and kick his butt! Their were so many poor looking animals, oversized horses, they were just crammed into the pens, the barns filthy. Plus the guy who runs the sale, a few yrs ago, hadn't put a mare that I bought, on his stud report and when I called him about it, actually said to me, Sorry, my mistake, your pocketbook. That still makes me mad, then he's talking that he can get papers on this donkey and that jenny, right, like I'm going to trust anything he says! Next yr I stay home, I can find a higher class sale than that to go to without to much trouble.
So now us 4 smart girls are ready to head home, weathers ok except for the high winds. But we're off, going 80 mph in winds so strong that I could barely hold the van on the road and then it started. The storm came from the EAST and the SOUTH and we're running right into it. OMG, sleet, rain, wind, snow, some places the interstate was only one lane. Semi's off all over, I think running people off, alot of cars were off but we kept going. They had never plowed or sanded. A couple times the wind blew my van right across the ice into other vehicles coming by me but somehow I got it back in line We traveled about 20-25 mph, sometimes down to 7 (my van doesn't understand this slow pace, barely kept it going). Alot of places down to one lane to travel in, we just kept plugging away. Then we're praying we can see the Winona exit. Alot of the exits were blocked by off vehicles. At one time we were going to stay in a hotel if we could find one, in Albert Lea but I kept going by the exit, pure ice hitting us. But we kept thinking, it's supposed to get worse today, if they close the interstate, we would be sunk. We Made it into Winona, Lisa and Shari decided to find a motel. Donna and I kept trucking, we had 25 miles left to go. We knew we'd never make it up our bluff here, We called Nate, he came down the hill with the truck and got us back up, Donna immediately jumped in her truck, headed back down the bluff, Nate's 10" tracks are already almost filled in. She just went very slow and made it to her place, about ten miles away. Thank heaven for cell phones, helped us more than once. It's been awhile since I've talked to God but I did last night, we must have had our gaurdian angels with us too as I don't even know how we made it. My shoulders and neck were just numb from grasping the wheel, I was just sick but it all went away when I walked into the house and all the little dogs greeted me with there licking and jumping. It took from 3:30 to 1:30 to drive 350 miles. I"m just so happy to be home, their are no words to express it. :aktion033:
