We knew the weather was supposed to be bad, they said a storm coming in from the west. So us four smart girls decided we wouldn't stay overnight, instead, we'd just go for the llama's and donkeys, miss the goats and rest of the exotics as we would beat the storm. Everyone knows, SD is west of WI so if we left by 3, we could outrun any old storm! So we enjoyed the sale, the two jennys I was waiting for came in at the end of the donkeys, instead of leading them in, she ran them in. OMG, long hooves, but these jennys were nice and well bred but I didn't bid because of the situation. I asked what she wanted for them and she said $1800 each!

: I asked her if they lead, she said she didn't know!

: How can you not know if your own donkeys lead! :new_shocked: If she wanted that kind of money, why not groom them and lead them in, in a good, presentable way, maybe even a show halter. The animals were handled very roughly by the ring people, they'd pick a donkeys back end up and shove it out the door and slam the big metal door on it. They had a brat kid in the ring, about 10 or 12 that took great joy in kicking and hitting the animals for no reason. We all wanted to go down there and kick his butt! Their were so many poor looking animals, oversized horses, they were just crammed into the pens, the barns filthy. Plus the guy who runs the sale, a few yrs ago, hadn't put a mare that I bought, on his stud report and when I called him about it, actually said to me, Sorry, my mistake, your pocketbook. That still makes me mad, then he's talking that he can get papers on this donkey and that jenny, right, like I'm going to trust anything he says! Next yr I stay home, I can find a higher class sale than that to go to without to much trouble.

So now us 4 smart girls are ready to head home, weathers ok except for the high winds. But we're off, going 80 mph in winds so strong that I could barely hold the van on the road and then it started. The storm came from the EAST and the SOUTH and we're running right into it. OMG, sleet, rain, wind, snow, some places the interstate was only one lane. Semi's off all over, I think running people off, alot of cars were off but we kept going. They had never plowed or sanded. A couple times the wind blew my van right across the ice into other vehicles coming by me but somehow I got it back in line We traveled about 20-25 mph, sometimes down to 7 (my van doesn't understand this slow pace, barely kept it going). Alot of places down to one lane to travel in, we just kept plugging away. Then we're praying we can see the Winona exit. Alot of the exits were blocked by off vehicles. At one time we were going to stay in a hotel if we could find one, in Albert Lea but I kept going by the exit, pure ice hitting us. But we kept thinking, it's supposed to get worse today, if they close the interstate, we would be sunk. We Made it into Winona, Lisa and Shari decided to find a motel. Donna and I kept trucking, we had 25 miles left to go. We knew we'd never make it up our bluff here, We called Nate, he came down the hill with the truck and got us back up, Donna immediately jumped in her truck, headed back down the bluff, Nate's 10" tracks are already almost filled in. She just went very slow and made it to her place, about ten miles away. Thank heaven for cell phones, helped us more than once. It's been awhile since I've talked to God but I did last night, we must have had our gaurdian angels with us too as I don't even know how we made it. My shoulders and neck were just numb from grasping the wheel, I was just sick but it all went away when I walked into the house and all the little dogs greeted me with there licking and jumping. It took from 3:30 to 1:30 to drive 350 miles. I"m just so happy to be home, their are no words to express it. :aktion033:

Yea we dont have much snow here but alot of ice. Didnt go to school today, althou our dumb teacher didnt cancel the class either.

You gals are just too big of risk takers!!
default_unsure.png
: Sure glad to hear you made it home okay though.
default_yes.gif
: Did you get a good look at any of the horses and were there any nice ones? Sure would like to go to that sale someday just to see what they do have...not much of an auction buyer but there may be a first time. Mary

Marnie,

Thank God you guys made it!

I would have been terrified! We get way more than our share of that kind of weather here in Wyoming too..... and I stay home on those days. I have been caught in it a few times, but if it is my choice I am too chicken to drive in those conditions. :)

I am so glad you all made it!

Susan O.

As far as I know, Lisa and Shari are still not home, it's 11:45 here. No answer on the cell phone, Lisa lives way back in a dead end street and Shari's car is parked there, no answer at either house.

I was thinking about that sale too, they dont' even coggins the horses so if they're going out of state, a person has to take the time to find the vet and get the coggins done, how stupid is that? Even the girl who wanted the $1800 for her jennys hadn't coggins them, talk about cheap! You also don't get a halter or a lead rope. Another thing about the sale, they had a small, dark, dank place to clip the horses heads or the horses, I dont' even see how they could see what they were doing, the people just tie the horse short and scare the crap out of them and start in. Maybe I'm just getting to soft to go to these sales anymore, or I let to many things bother me but they do bother me, I think they would alot of us. They did have some real nice looking horses there, for the people who are wondering, they had a young filly with her head clipped, about the prettiest little thing I'd ever seen. Their was some good looking horses but alot of unkept, oversized too. They were crammed in so tight, it was hard to see them.

Uggg Marnie I am glad you made it home safe. I am sorry you drove all that way for nothing though. Kind of disappointing. I would have been upset about those conditions also. I like the private sales so much better!

Just read this and immediately called Marnie and said "You little s**t. I didn't think they would go. Thank goodness they made it home okay. Oh well they say there is one in every family. :bgrin Right Marnie, Donna, Lisa and Shari. :bgrin That takes care of four families. Come on guys I'm just kidding.. :bgrin

Wow, that does not sound fun at all. I'm glad you made it home safely and can relax now.

Hmmmm...... Guess I have a different view.

I've been going to this sale for MANY years. It is a well-run sale every year I've been there. (I only go for the catalogued mini sale, though)

There is always straw available for the stalls - it is up to the people consigning their animals to put down the bedding but it IS available. There is always hay, there is plenty of water. If the CONSIGNORS decide not to clean their stalls or put down the straw that IS available, it's not the fault of the sale management. It's lazy, careless consignors.

As far as halters - in the catalogued sale EVERY horse goes home with a halter that the consignor pays half and the buyer pays half. No "ands, ifs, or buts" about it. That is a condition of the sale.

As far as non-coggins tested horses, those animals in the sale that are consigned by South Dakota people are not required to have one run...and if the buyer is from SD, none is needed. That's their state law. I agree...it is a CHEAP consignor who does not coggins test their animals but it is not the fault of sale management. But any animals that are brought in from another state need to have a coggins test. They do put in the catalog and they do announce if a horse has a coggins test. A vet is on-site for those that need to have one run before going out of SD, and the cost is really reasonable.

Just thought I would point this out because I really like the sale. I've sold there and I've bought there. One of my FAVORITE mares came from that sale!!! Yes - there are lots of other species of animals that are there before the catalogue mini sale. But the mini sale is well run. If papers are pending or on application - it is announced. If there is a problem with the paperwork, the sale management will bend over backwords to help people get it straightened out. If a horse has a "ding" it is announced.

Can't comment on the guys in the ring - never ran into any issues with the mini sale - but those are halter-broke animals and they are led in by their consignor.

Would I go to it again as either a consignor or buyer?? YES, in a heart-beat. (It's just too far away now that I've moved and I've turned into a woos about winter.)

I'm glad to hear they are better with the horses, because they were just plain enjoying kicking, poking and frightening already stressed out animals It made me sick. At one point the boy "helping" show was kicking a very pregnant Jenny in the stomach. Too me that was worse to watch, than riding on ice most of the way home. Marnie was super driving & it is nothing less than a miracle that we weren't one of the many cars in the ditch.

I think I would report that abusive crew to the authorities for animal cruelty. Anybody got it on tape?

Kicking pregnant jennies in the gut is inexcusable.

If they would do that to a pregnant jenny in front of your eyes, then WHAT are they doing behind closed doors to run the other animals through?

Sad, indeed, and infuriating!

KICKING PREGANT JENNIES! Ohh, its a darn good thing I dont go to sales, because that would of not sat good with me at all. My mouth would of opened up bigtime! Wasnt there anyone any of you could of gone to and really did some serious complaining? Donna, and to think I Was going to bet you would buy something :bgrin ! Anyways, glad to hear you ALL made it home safe and sound.

: And, just to let you know..we havent even received a dusting of the storm YET.(I just know I will be kicking myself in a few hours for saying that!).its darn windy out there, but our grass is all showing. Its suppose to hit us today at some point, but since you all like snow in the western part.... :bgrin you can keep the complete storm over by you~ Corinne

this is why i always get in trouble at sales because i cant/wont keep my mouth shut. went to one a few years back with ginia and a boy was kicking and whipping a pony mare because she kept looking for her foal. We umm let him know what we thought of that. Thought i was going to get kicked out

Glad to hear you all made it back safely. Sounds like it was quite the stressful drive back home

Yesterday I was almost kicking myself for not going, but now I'm so glad I didn't!!! About two hours ago it started snowing so hard here, I can barely see 1/4 mile across our railroad tracks :new_shocked:

WOW!!! All I can say is "WHAT A TRIP!!"
default_rolleyes.gif
: Everyone kept saying we should stay home but we have talked about going since last year and it will be another whole year before this sale comes up again!

I know that I am exhausted
default_yes.gif
: and I didn't even do any of the driving. Marnie is a super driver and we all kept asking her "if" she wanted us to drive "until" we hit the very, very bad weather, treacherous roads and little visibility and Marnie asked if any of us wanted to drive - there was dead silence -

The sale itself did have some nice animals but the majority of the "exotics" were just there to basically get "dumped" many of the animals had very looooong hooves, they were not halter broke and not well taken care of. The pens were so crowded and after an animal was sold it was put in an already overcrowded pen with all the others.

There was a baby jenny that couldn't have been any more then 2 months old looking and calling for her mom, she was put in with a bunch of others and was trying so hard to find someone to nurse on. It was heartbreaking to watch as the others kept kicking and biting her, she was so tiny and confused.

I felt bad leaving and seeing all those animals in the outside pens with no shelter, no water, no feed and the big storm heading their way. With the freezing rain and all the snow, I don't even like to think about them staying out in that weather.

I did buy 2 baby jennets and Lisa bought 2 baby llamas, we had made provisions for them to be kept in a friend's horse trailer and he was taking them to his place until we can get there to pick them up. After we had gone to the office to pay for them, then we found out we had to find the vet to come and do a coggins before we could transport them. The halters had already been stripped off of them so here we are 2 babies, no halters, looking for a vet to do the coggins - weather conditions becoming worse every minute. Needless to say it was frustrating.

Because of the weather we opted not to stay for the horse sale and I do hope it was run much better then the Exotics - at least I surely hope that kid who thought it was cool to prod and kick and chase every animal in there stays home!!

Wow you ladies are very brave driving so far with an impending storm!!

But the draw of a good deal is always a strong one:)

Glad you all made it home safe and sound!

That is soooooooooooo horrendous what was happening to those animals.

Donna your story about that little little donkey looking for her Momma almost made me weep.

What is it about lowlife people that they feel so much better about themselves when they inflict pain on a helpless animals

I truly despise, and I do mean that, nasty, cruel people! To think a 12 year old is already such a bully......God help their animals?

Wow, Donna, and Marnie, You guys had a horrendous trip..

The one good thing is that you made it all back safe!! Thank the Lord for that one.... Hey if you want to shop at my place I have happy, loved, well cared for animals, that will make you feel better doing business...

I just hate going anywhere and seeing this type of situtation, so I keep my little head in a hole when it comes to big sales. I guess I miss some opportunities that way, but I also avoid the heartbreak, that may cause me to buy out of pity..
