My husband and I are seriously thinking about moving out of Michigan, he is a truck driver so we can really move anywhere!! Not Florida, we want sunshine nice temps, not to hot and humid during the summer and not to cold during the winter!! So what can everyone tell me about their state?

: Thanks Heidi

For climate, I would like to move to the Southern OR area. My dad loves the climate in Northern CA, but not the cost of real estate, the taxes, etc.

If you go further North in Oregon, the temps are even more moderate, but there is more rain.

A lot of people come here and are impressed w/the nice temps. Here, we have average highs of 70-something (Summer), and average lows in the 40s for Winter, but it rains a LOT though we are on the furthest NW part of the state.

There's a lot of diversity around the state, and it's a beautiful one. I highly doubt I will leave this state, ever, at least as my home base.

For climate, weather, and scenery, charming friendly good people, right here in Tennessee.

Grew up in Connecticut. Way too cold, way too much snow to shovel for my dad.

Spend too many years sweating in Florida with way too many bugs. I hate the heat.

Tennessee has mountains and valleys to choose from or the plateaus. The most snow I've seen up here in ten years as been 6 inches. It usually melts off before noon.

The coldest it's been up here has been about 6 degrees, that's not happened much, maybe twice or three times a year, but that usually warms up as the mornings progress and then it's back to about 40-45 degrees on most winter days. Winter doesn't seem to last long up here. It's not cold yet and I don't expect it to get very cold until usually in January. Jan-to Feb. seems to be the coldest months.

The summers up here on the mountain are not humid. I don't have any mosquitoes at all where I am. Not many flying insects but I do have those darn face flies in mid summer on the horses so we bring out the fly masks.

I don't have snake troubles. Just a couple every now and then. I think that's because we have a lot of barn cats and no water around.

There's always something to do here, always some celebrations going on for some reason. This time of year, there are so many fall festivals and parades, hay rides, for who knows what I can't keep up.

Propertys are plentiful and acerage can still be had for under $1,000 per acre in an undeveloped area.

My humble little abode was just appraised at more than twice what we paid for it ten years ago so some areas are sky rocketing since the hurricanes drove a lot of people here from out of state.

There are many small towns that refuse to grow and expand so some areas have pretty much nothing to offer execpt one stop sign in the middle of town. Other towns are booming and growing at an unbelievable rate. We are finally getting a Walmart!

I agree with Marty, SW VA or NE TN is great. They have tornados in west TN and it is hotter. I am 20 minutes from the appalachian mnts and 45 minutes from the Creeper Trail.

Lots of farms for donks and horses, usually little humid in summer, not like FL. Average summer temps are in the middle upper 80's, spring and fall in the lower and middle 70's and winter around 25-35 average. The rainfall is average.

Have to agree with Liz (Nootka). Larry has been all over the lower 48 (and I've been with him for most) when we were also looking for another location to move to.

We LOVE Oregon and love the Eastern side of the Cascades and have decided to put up with the colder winters. What helps is that it's a DRY cold.

I do admit that the absolute most wonderful part of Oregon has to be Southern Oregon. It gets a bit more percipitation than Central Oregon so it is greener, but it doesn't get as cold. It also doesn't have all the tax issues as Northern California that Liz mentioned......

For some reason, after checking out all different areas of the country, we kept coming back to Oregon and asking ourselves -- Why are we looking elsewhere???

What about San Diego California? I think they have the most beautiful weather!

: Of course you won't get snow, but the summers are nice (not too hot) and the winters are mild (not too cold). It's expensive living though.

[SIZE=12pt]I live in central Alabama and the summers can get pretty hot and humid here. The winters are mild and it may snow once every few years. So I would have to agree with Marty and Littledonkeys.com about Tennessee.

: That's the first place I thought of when I read this thread. The mountains are beautiful in northeast TN. The summers are not so humid. If we ever moved and we could choose where, it would definitely be somewhere between Knoxville and Bristol. I just think it would be a great place to live!

Thank You for the replys, I have heard Tennessee is great, and I do know it is beautiful, I have always loved how pretty the state is. How are the schools in Tennessee? Crime? employment? I am a stay at home mom right now but eventually I want to get back to work (besides the kids and horses:) Is one part more horsey then the other?

I definitely agree with Nootka and Miniv. Oregon is a great place to live! We have also looked at other places in the past and have always come back to Oregon. You have all the seasons here and can have any kind of weather you like depending on which part of the state you want to live in. People seem to be under the misconception that it always rains here. Well, the NW corner of the state does see more rain than the rest however, where we live, the central part of the state (2 miles from Miniv

) we have perfect weather for me: all four seasons with very little precipitation, ocassional snow and ocassional rain but a beautiful spring and fall and nice summer too. Temperatures can average with lows in the teens to 20s in the winter and highs in the 30s-40s and summers are usually 80s-90s with lows in the 50s-60s. The snow never lasts too long in the winter and there is always a nice reprieve from the summer heat overnight. The state is beautiful and green with some drier areas too and we don't see any hurricanes, tornados or most other crazy weather like some places experience. We are pretty fortunate and shoot, I probably shouldn't even tell you this because you just may want to move here. Ok, forget I mentioned it! It is terrible here with lots of bugs and...yeah....Bigfoot! You better just stay away. :bgrin

Funny about the bugs, Debra, and which governor was that who coined the slogan about welcome to Oregon. Have a nice visit and then go home or something to that effect?

*LOL*

Yep, hereabouts in the NW corner, would say we get around 130" of rain per year more or less, depending, but it's easy to pick a climate in this state plus we have mountains w/snow almost year round, the beach, deserts and beautiful, lush forests as well as plentiful farmland...!

I love Central OR, too, but find it a bit less moderate as far as temps than the Southern part, but I don't mind some extremes, matter of fact, I like the dry heat and dry cold/snow of the Central region.

I'm pretty biased, though. Aside from a few years in SW Washington, I have lived in Oregon all my life from birth.

: I live in Virginia, would not want to move, but don' recommend it either hot and humid in the summer [i hate Summer] anymore we get awful ice storms in the winter then lose power. A couple of years ago we were without power for 2 weeks due to an ice storm. Tenn is great I have cousins who live there. One in Knoxville and one in Kingston and Ala. is nice. My dad was from 'bama so we use to visit there often, but high unemployment. Every state has it's pluses and minuses.

Shhhhhhhhh.....don't tell anyone else about Oregon! Keep it our little secret! :bgrin

I am in extreme north west California right on the coast.

Price of land is lower here than further south. Right here on the coast we have the coast weather kind of yucky a good part of the time but when its nice its REAL nice, not hot, not cold ,no snow no heat wave.

About ten miles east of me you have a totally different climate. Light snow in winter sometimes, warmer weather in summer but not unbearable, also the Smith River and the Redwoods.

Not to far from highways 101-199-or I-5.

No malls for 100 miles. We do have a Home Depot that just opened and a Wal Mart.

Southern Oregon is nice to. I love it up in the Pistol River Gold Beach Area but the drive to a major highway way would be further I think.

My husband is from Mich a small town and I am going to spell it all wrong I will spell it as it sounds Ips-ah-lan-t

or was it T-con-cha. Can't spell that either. !!

Don't know if I'd be in Tennessee right now........They are being SLAMMED with high winds and rain. Probably the same storm that hit Texas.

:bgrin That would be Ypsilanti and Tekonsha (unless you meant Tecumseh) and both are within 45 minutes of me!! You did a good job of spelling them phonectically! :bgrin Many of the towns in Michigan are Native American, can you tell?? One of my favorites are Tittabawasee!

We lived in Northern lower Michigan in the snow belt and moved to south central Michigan about 10 years ago and like it sooo much better!! Personally I am ready to move to Tennesee, Kentucky, West Virginia or South Carolina area but don't want to leave family. Actually I think Hawaii sounds like paradise!!

h2t99 ~ apparently alot of your Michigan mates have moved to NC....I'm surrounded !! I like to think of Michganians as the "redneck of the north" . I'm in an area where NASCAR is King and there seem to be a lot of folks from Michigan that have moved here to work on the race teams.

Matter of fact my back door neighbor and best friends are from Tacumsee (sp) and they been here 10 years and have no plans on going back to those frigid winters. All of there family comes for visits and they threaten to move down ....... and add to the 'darn yankee' population .

Back to your question.....I've always heard Oregon was nice !! Just kidding....we'd love to have you.

If you can handle the heat and humidity from mid July until end of August , the rest is wonderful !! We do get a bout of ice every now and then but I guess we have a kick butt power Co-op . But the next day it's usually back up to 50 and if there's anything left , it's not for long. Last year I don't think I even had to pull the heavy winter coat out. Some parts of our state are more prone to hurricanes, so I just go there to vacation.

All and all I think anywhere in the eastern Tennessee all the way to the Piedmont of NC is the IDEAL place to live.

I am in Michigan too....winters are way too long here, I don't blame you for wanting to move. I would love to live in Kentucky or Tennessee. Went there on a houseboat trip to Lake Cumberland...it was so beautiful.

Well since we have had so much bad luck lately, I am thinking maybe it is time, we know eventually we will have to move, my husband was in a bad car accident 10 yrs ago and the doctors have even told us that we will have to go somewhere that the climate will be "kinder" to him. So I think now is the time, our kids are young so they will adjust easier, and I don't want to move to far away from my family. I have always loved Tennessee so maybe now is the right time!! My husband is a team roper so he would like to of course like to go to Texas, but the humidity to me seems like it is high there!! At least Texas would be alot closer if we lived in Tennessee!!
