Hi I have a white mare that I'm planning to show in the next two weeks. Can you please suggest a product that REALLY works to get out the pee and manure stains. Unfortunately she is a pig, a big white pig with green hocks

Thanks,

I have used Quick Silver on my pintos for years, but I also have good luck with Dawn dish washing detergent. Anything with bluing in it (so it has a blue color) should help. You can leave it on stains undiluted for a few minutes, but if you leave it too long the horse will turn slightly bluish. The other thing I use at the shows for fresh stains is Baby Wipes. And in a pinch, the spray whitener.

I'm showing a solid white mare this year and I, too, use a shampoo with bluing in it for the tough stains. I also keep her in a heavily bedded stall to minimize staining. And, yes, the baby wipes work really well too.

I worked as a groom at a hunter/jumper barn for many years. My advice? Sell it!! Just kidding

Quik Silver and Miracle Groom were the best products I found. There was another one that was a green spot remover. I can't remember the brand - maybe Absorbine? Also lay in a supply of cornstarch or white chalk to cover the stubborn and/or last minute stains. Also keep a slinky on the horse all the time and don't clip until you're ready to show. It's easy to clip off the stains when they're on long hair. Keep the tail braided, too.

We had one big pinto horse that got orange stains from a reaction of his urine with the pine shavingsl What a nightmare! I was so glad when he got sold. And his stall was cleaned twice a day. Good luck!

Just a word of caution. Some of the horse products for cleaning white horses have bleach in them. Please follow directions to a "T". The hair will soften and later break off if not used correctly, please use a good conditioner with it.

I have used WISK laundry detergent in the past to remove stains. Sometimes it takes several baths to get the tail white, but I would use conditioner inbetween each time.

Good luck,

Beth

I am getting FABULOUS results on a black and white Tobiano pinto (all four legs are white and nearly her entire mane is white) mare that I am conditioning/campaigning this year with Cowboy Magic Concentrated Rosewater Shampoo not used in conjunction with anything else. Before show season she had silver in her mane from where she was "polishing" the fence panels by sticking her head and neck through them to graze around the outside of the fence and it was the ONLY thing that I tried that got that out of her mane. I was worried to death that I wouldn't be able to get it out. It also leaves the hair feeling so soft and fine and her coat (right to her skin) is very easy to groom after being turned out, rolling, etc.

Since you have some time before the show, you might try using Oxyclean on the tail and letting it sit for a few inutes and washing it out then conditioning very well. If the stains don't come out the first time, do it again the next day. I agree with the Quick Silver...great stuff! After the show bath, you may try an apple cider vinegar rinse, that tends to make whites really pop. You mix it 2 cups of vinegar to 5 gallons of water and sponge on. That's just for show day though. Hope that helps.

valshingle, is the product you are thinking of Cowboy Magic Green Spot Remover? I've used that, but I'm cheap and would rather use just plain rubbing alcohol to take out a green spot. It works just the same at a far cheaper price.

Beth,

Thank you. I could not remember the name of that detergent. The Arabian breeder I worked for in college used it to remove pee stains on the gray Arabs and palomino half-Arabs. It works very well.

I need to try to see if I can find any around here, I have two cremellos, a palomino, a silver bay (looks palomino with nearly white tail) and a silver black (light tail). I don't show, but still like to remove the yellow stains from their tails at least once a year for photo shoots and such.

Another thing that works is baking soda and vinegar; they react and effervess, which does a pretty good job of removing the stains.
