Mine was in a bit of trouble today. Late last night he got out(someone didnt sucure the gate) and got into the DOG FOOD :new_shocked: Ate we recon about 1/2 to 1 pound -- Vet took him off of pellets / grain (i am feeding pellets normally) for 2 days Pending him making like he should.

SO what have yours eaten before that they shoudnt?

Good ol' Gramma Pony has eaten cat food, dog food, bird food (seed mix as well as pellets formulated for breeding finches), people food, uhhmmm...that's just what I KNOW about.

My vet says in moderate amounts it's unlikely to HURT her or any horse, however it's not a good idea for a longterm diet to have anything other than food formulated for horses/horse appropriate.

I am sure your guy will be fine, from the sounds of it.

My Arabian once ate a half a bag of cat food thanks to some neighbor kids. She was fine once we got her put up away from the helpful kids, though her poop DID stink something awful. My vet had me feed her just hay for a day or so pending what happened. It was a big bag, like 20 lb.

I've known of a lot of big horses who've gorged on dog or cat food and have lived to tell the tale with no problems, but it' s a good idea to keep an eye on them anyway. Good luck...

:bgrin :bgrin while at work one day, Tonto found the peanut butter and got the lid off. He ate the whole jar, it was a sight when I got home, called for him and around the he comes with the jar stuck over his muzzle :new_shocked: , still trying to get that last bit !

I had a mini that loved cat food and also one year when I took him to see santa at petsmart, santa kept feeding him dog treats!! :new_shocked:

Spittin Image always get into the cats food she bends down under the fence and grabs it out of the cat bowl. She grabs it when the cats move the bowl by the fence and she gets it .

Please be careful with the dog food. There have been minis die of impaction from eating it. The dog food can swell and cause an impaction.

Yep, cat food is an altime favorite with my horses. But when I was purchasing Winnie the Pooh of Arenosa I spoke to Audrey Barrett about her and she mentioned that Winnie had a fondness for apple fritters, cinnamon toast and pop-tarts ---- soo, not wanting Her Highness to feel deprived I followed in Audrey's footsteps and each morning when I went to feed would turn Winnie out and let her follow me up and down the barn aisle and fed her pop-tarts, apple fritters and cinnamon toast (pretty much whatever I had in my hand at the time) - just like her "mom" used to do. Needlesstosay, she loved the attention!

Another horse of mine loved, CRAVED, multi-grain Cheerios - probably better for her than apple fritters (and better for me too) - much easier to load into a pocket also!

Dog food, cat food, and persimmons!

Chopped the persimmon tree down, though!

Our Morgans would say PTOOEY if they were to ever get one chunk of catfood in their mouth--had one reach into the tub of catfood I was carrying to the barn one day (he thought it was oats) and he was spitting & making EEWWWWW, ICK faces for some time afterward.

These minis, though, they like catfood. Not that we feed it to them  but they'll munch it down if they get the chance. yuck.

Not minis - but I had an Arabian mare who ate a tunafish sandwich on white bread once, and a half Arabian (adult) mare who drank 2 gallons of calf milk replacer - I had to go back inside to make more for the cow! (and the mare never touched the stuff again...!)

My beloved Honeypony's most favorite food in the world was glazed donuts!

My minis haven't been here long enough to have gotten something they shouldn't and I haven't offered them too many things other than horse feed and horse treats.

But, my half-arab gelding like plums, but he'll only eat one per season.

I have a full size mare who loves watermelon! She begs for it! It's her summertime treat, and we'll buy a small one specifically for her, splitting it up to give it to her over 2 or 3 days. Her nose gets all sloppy and pink! It's the funniest thing to see!

I used to have a horse that loved bananas too. Not sure about the minis, we haven't really given them anything out of the ordinary.

My horses have eaten dry cat food before.

But then again my horses eat everything from candy, to cereal, pop tarts, even hamburgers and ham sandwiches. Going to shows are there favorite thing due to all the snack choices :)

My arabian mare LOVES peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! Whenever I go outside with one she sees me and literally starts drooling and foaming around her mouth!!! Its hilarious to watch! And of course I have to give her some after seeing those big brown eyes!

Oh my Shetland would fight me over my Sausage McMuffin. And loved the French Fries,

And then I would stop at Dairy Queen for ice cream cone. I shared many a Coke with many of my horses over the years and even a beer at times :new_shocked:

Fred has a passion for cheddar cheese. All of my guys will eat just about anything but the funniest was when Fred decided he liked cheesecake. Ever watch a horse eat cheesecake? He looked like a rabid dog he was foaming at the mouth, but he enjoyed the piece he snatched. Linda B

The worst one of our animals ever got was a dairy cow that my sister had for 4H got into a bag of onions we had stored in our barn. we called the vet and he said "just wait and see". The first day she had really bad breath, by the second day her milk smelled like onion soup. it took a week to clear up. DR.

My step-sister's QH/Paso Fino cross liked bubble gum, licorice candies, and would steal ham sandwhiches, coffee, soda.... o_O

Anything edible, he'd eat!!
