I watched the show and just felt they went a little to far trying to put every kind of so called dysfunctional character in one show.

I think a gay son and daughter getting into drugs was enough for the say th first 6 episodes then bring in another crazy relative or something. I thought it rather silly and except for the father badly acted, no sense of love or warmth especially between any of the kids or the parents . HOWEVER I cannot see going postal over this show when on any given night we see brutal rapes, butchery, siblings doing really hateful things to one another, swearing, children disrespecting parents with the foulest mouthes I have ever heard etc etc and no one blinks an eye no letters get written to get these shows off the air.

If a group is going to start writing letters start writing about the sex and violence, the permeates the air waves today as entertainment.

Working in a school I want to laugh every time something like this comes up,I see the effects of the violence the kids see every day on the playground and in the hallways.

I also will get down off my box now!

Amen Bonnie.

Life is about choices......you don't like...........you don't watch. Better things to do with my time than going nuts over a television program.

And Kris....I knew you'd be watching!

It always amuses me when people demand that TV shows not be shown. If you are concerned about your children being exposed to sex, violence, bad mortals etc., why do you let them watch TV? There are a million wonderful books that you could sit down and read together as a family. Or how about playing a nice board game all together???

When my kids were younger, after dinner we did homework and then after they were all ready for bed I read to them. I did this for years and years. As they got older they read to me. I wouldn't trade those memories and all the great stories we read together for hours of vegging out in front of the TV.

TV is what it is. Don't expect more.

If you want dysfunctional families with a happy ending watch "Super Nanny"- they start off as the families from you-know-where and end up as Happy Families!!!

I watch the show. I found it slightly amusing. I think the point of the show, is to say that even religious families can be dysfunctional. The show deals with almost all the modern day issues (sex, drugs, and so on). the one thing i noticed about this show, is that it only deals with these issues with teenagers but adults too. As for the show it's slef, i liked the way it's shot, the acting could be better, and the plot could be alot better. when it was over the first thing that came to mind was "that was an "O.C" for adults"

I think NBC would make a gold mine if they did a show on my family........

no drugs or gays but plenty of really other strange things :new_shocked:

I watched it, and liked it. *shrugs* I don't normally even sit down to watch TV, I'd rather have a book instead.

And they protrayed Jesus almost exactly as I'd see Him. Someone who guides and lends an ear when you need it.

I'm an Episcopalian Appalachian American( that in itself is dysfunctional in East Tennessee) and I found it mildly entertaining. The priest did apologize personally to Jesus for G.D.ing his brother-in-law. I also felt like they tried to put too much into the premier show and could have saved some of it for later. But I also found that true in the last chapters of the Da Vinci Code that they tried to cram too much in in lieu of waiting to do a sequel. I found this surely not the most offensive show on TV right now. I can't even watch the previews of Fear Factor without wanting to throw up. At least there is something to watch now on Friday nights.

By the way Marty that is what we're called now instead of hillbillies in order to be politically correct.

Appalachian Americans (got this through an email from another forum that some of you are on).

Just one more thing to add in here. I do sensor my childrens TV. And our Tv is on rarely around here to begin with. We read like crazy and love books. Each bedroom and our family room has thier own library's and I have an account with Barnes and Noble, they know me there. LOL

My thought on changing the channel is this, it is fine and I agree that if you don't like somethign don't watch it. That works great for you and me. What about those million or so children out there where there is no parent home to stop that child from watching that show. You may say it does not affect me or mine so it is none of my business, but here is why I disagree and chose to take a stand on this one show. Those children watch this show that is without morals and pointless, and go out and think that it is ok to act like these people they saw on TV. Afterall, it IS a show with Jesus in it so it must be ok to act that way. Those kids just moved to my kids schools or YOUR kids schools and now my kids and your kids are seeing this new kid act this way and acting as if this is normal and ok. Well, it isn't ok to me to have my children surrounded by other peoples children that do not have good morals and values. I home school two of my children for just this reason.

I will not argue the point, this is my view and it is right for me. I am not trying to push it off on anyone else.

Soap box in hand and aaawwwaaayyyy I go! LOL

IMO, children are eventually going to be exposed to "real life" one way or another, like it or not. You can not allow them to see all the violence and substance abuse or hear all the cussing on TV or on the radio or in books and magazines or in the movies or in video games that you want but it'll still be out there and eventually they're going to cross paths with it. You're not going to cover the ears and eyes of every child in the world so why not teach the ones you know to make good choices, instead.

I can't comment upon this show, as I only watch a very small amount of TV, but I have to agree strongly with envypoodles that it is naive to think that you can shelter your children from the real world, for good or for bad, and from morals other than your own, for good or for bad.

I worry about children who are so protected as to have no means of dealing with what is really out there. Childhood and adolescence are the times when we learn to deal with the real world while still being guided by loving parents. Just as with physical diseases, children who are too sheltered will have no immunity...no way of dealing with other influences when they are on their own.

While I was growing up, my mother never censored any of our reading, never forbade us to read anything. Rather, she read it, too, so that she could discuss it with us. This worked well, and in the cases of books with a great deal of foul language, gave her an idea of what we heard every day in school -- she was shocked and had a hard time believing kids actually talked that way, but she could deal with it better by knowing than by turning a blind eye to it. (As adults, my siblings and I rarely swear...not because we're prudes, but because there are always better words to express ourselves. We certainly knew all the words, but felt it was beneath us to resort to such a limited vocabulary.)

Hee-hee... I watch "Jackass: The Movie" instead of "The Book Of Daniel" on TV last night.. :bgrin

When that one guy did the underwear wedgie bungee jumping.. it was too funny!
Hee Hee that was pretty funny :bgrin My eldest has a very demented sense of humor thought it would be funny to invite me to a movie, which happened to be Jackass: The Movie. My husband thought I was crazy to go and it was pretty bad but what was even more bizarre was that the majority of the patrons were my age or older. I expected the theater to be filled with a bunch of goofy 20 somethings but they must have had better sense.

I don't watch much tv anymore and have to be pretty bored or there has to be an interesting movie on to do so anymore.

Geesh who needs more dark comedy or reality shows. I get my fill of it in everyday life

No you can't expect to shelter your kids from everything but that's no reason to quit trying and let the world eat them up either. I guess you'd have to be a parent to understand.

Look... I didn't say I completely shelter my child from all the world has...and I do agree that he will get a dose of the real world soon enough... but is it wrong for me to try to hold on to the innocence of his childhood as long as possible... Just because the show is out there, doesn't mean he or we have to watch it. I agree I can change the channel... where we live now, we have satellite there is plenty else to watch... once our house is built, we will have 2-3 basic channels... no cable, and not satellite until we get settled... I just wouldn't want my child stumbling into that show... At what point do we draw the line? For myself, I draw it here... for you it may be different. For the record, we DO read a lot of books, we DO play games, we DO spend quality time together away from the t.v. and most of the time when he watches t.v. it's cartoons or a DVD... Everything I have said is just MY opinion... Apparently in my area... others shared that opinion... as the t.v. station said that had literally received HUNDREDS of calls and e-mails not wanting it to be shown... Please don't hang me for feeling the way I do, or for how I raise my child, I respect your opinion... please respect mine... after all, its just one opinion...

Edited to say... I do realise the church has it's problems and issues... every family does... I just don't think they should be exploited on national television... I wouldn't want my family's...

Okay throwing my two cents in again, said I wouldn't but here it is anyway....I DITTO minimama's comments. This family does't watch alot of TV and our childrens television time is carefully monitored, and sensored!

On the other comment about sheltering the children and keeping them from being exposed to "real life". We'll all I can say about that is THEY ARE MY CHILDREN and GOD intrusted my husband and I with them, and if sheltering them is keeping them from watching PRE-marital sex, DRUGS, VIOLENCE, FILTHY language. My children probably are better informed about REAL LIFE than most kids in what you would call REAL LIFE.... give me a break.. WE can teach our children MORALS that are truly MORAL!!! not what today's society thinks is morally correct.. so they can learn that having sex before marriage, doing drugs, talking down to people and showing NO RESPECT to others is okay and morally acceptable... SORRY not happening and if you think that that is sheltering my children... FINE with ME!!!

Well, now let us not assume that my children do not know what the real world is like. They have gotten plenty of exposure to the real world. But, I am not going to knowingly put them directly in harms way. just as I would not send them out to play in a flood, or leave them home alone while I went to Hawaii, or let them play in the road, or play with gasoline and matches. I also believe that by not protecting them from certain things, i am knowingly putting them in harms way. It does not mean that they do not know about those things, it just means that I do not want them exposed to it and thrown in their faces everday of their lives.

And, just because this is a part of the "real" world, does not mean it is ok to just sit on your hands and say oh well thats life. Just because it exists, does not make it right. And just because we know about it or live with it or know people that do it, does not mean we have to agree with it or encourage it.

Man my soapbox is getting a lot of use today. Guess it's good to dust the cobwebs off every now and then though huh? LOL

Love you'all!!!!

Wow. Are ya'll that disconnected from or blind to what really goes on in your children's lives outside of your home (ie. in school or after school) or is it just me growing up in a "big city" that has me all mixed up? I remember well the kids around me cussing and talking about drugs, sex and alcohol as early as the fifth grade. I'm sure they talked about it even earlier than that but because I wasn't "cool" (too much of a loner and into animals) I either didn't have a clue what they were saying or wasn't in on their conversations. My high school had a preschool IN IT for the children of the KIDS there. My first job was working as teacher's aide for a kindergarten where the children would cuss out their teachers, throw chairs at eachother and imitate WWE wrestlers posturing in disgusting, sexual ways. Personally, I don't see many people who'd be able to shelter their children from that...

Here's two!

And again, just because it is out there doesn't make it right!

I must have missed where anyone said anything like what we're talking about is "right?" Right or wrong it's all out there, everyone will be exposed to some sort of it in their lifetime and no matter how morally righteous you are home IMO you still need to know how to deal with it "out there." I've seen countless reports where parents who thought their children were so well versed in how to cope with the real world were STILL lured into what would have been very bad situations by testers.

I don't feel I'm very far removed... I'm 29... and if I have the chance to control something my child may come in contact with in an uncontrolled world, I will... When I was in school I knew everybody (our graduating class was 265) there wasn't much of a drug problem if any... yes there was bad language, but I didn't use it, and if a television show had too much bad language or indecency, it was turned off... I was raised by my grandparents, and maybe those old values stuck... I agree with Narrow way... if raising my child the way I do is considered "sheltering him", then Fine By Me! Count me as three...
