Danielle, a "red bag" in a premature delivery is often related to the mare aborting before full term. It is actually quite common for the foal to come out in the bag that way. I have had it happen here in a late term abortion also. A red bag is not always the cause of outside forces, such as fescue etc.
My 2 cents - Independence aborted a filly (at 7 months gestation) 2 years ago Thursday... we brought Indy in from the pasture with a piece of the placenta hanging out as described... had a vet appointment to check on the foal since she had stopped kicking 2 days prior and she was an active foal. Sometimes, it just happens.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Bob and his girlfriend, Tonto and Aurora and Lori. It is hard to lose a foal at any time.
