Oh miracle of miracles, I found a pic of that mare! I am quite certain that this mare had no tobiano, she had no indicators, was a loudly expressed frame, and had 4 dark legs. Tobi paw prints are usually out in the middle of a white area, not feathering off the dark like this. But you can see...

Dots are mostly just dots, a typical tobiano trait. But sometimes clusters of them, the paw prints, can be found on homozygous tobis. Ink spots/paw prints don't neccessarily indicate homozygousity, and not all homozygous horses have them, but there is a correlation. A single one like that is...

The sire certainly doesn't look silver to me... and it would easily hide on a palomino. Let us know if you get her re-tested what the results are. If she's for sure negative, perhaps sire is smokey silver black? Doubting it, but it had to come from somewhere!

Actually, that's exactly right (the bold part). More of the horse population carries some form of pinto than most people like to believe. Die-hard breeders of breeds such as some drafts and Appaloosas like to swear that their horses contain no pinto. "Pinto" doesn't necessarily mean loud...

Mare is sorrel/flaxen, stallion looks to be silver black pinto. What silver does is causes all the black points of the horse - legs, mane and tail - to turn whitish silver colored. You can see the dark streaks in his tail. The body of the black horse is like the stallions... not really black...
