For those of you who are following the thread about my new Miniature Mare that might be pregnant, here's an update. And for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about and want to learn more, click the link below.

http://www.miniaturehorsetalk.com/index.ph...t=0&start=0

Since I have found out that it's possible for Sugar to be bred to foal this year OR bred to foal next year (running with stud the whole time) we have decided to go the ultrasound route. I just got off the phone with the lady in the office and she should be checked August 5th.

I decided to go with the ultrasound b/c with the blood test if she's only a month in and she has a big worm belly causing her to look bred, the pregnancy will not show up on that test. We are hoping if she is bred for next year, we can catch it early enough and terminate the pregnancy.

So, there's a minor update. Will let you know what we find out on Aug. 5th.

I'll be dying to know and waiting for the update after you find out.

Best of luck to you and your girl that she is not bred. HUGS to you both!

She is a pretty girl.

When I was involved with some rescue horses last month, we witnessed a stallion mount a yearling filly. I was so mad at the owner, I couldn't help but say something. My sister said if I had spoken to her like that, she would have made me leave the farm. The owner just made excuses. She wondered why God didn't take care of that.

I was so upset, it has haunted me.

Hope everything works out. If she is carrying a foal, I'm sure you will make a difference with your good care.

I'm glad you are doing US...please update when you can!

:pray praying she is just wormy!!!!!!

Why waste the money on the ultrasound? Just give her the Lutalyse and don't worry. It'll be effective for upwards of several months post-breeding, and will not cause any problems if she wasn't pregnant in the first place.

Nathan, I thought one shot of lutalyse was effective only in the first 35 days, and after that you may have to give several doses before abortion occurs? And after 100 days it may not be effective at all? Is that not correct?

If this filly isn't pregnant, it's too bad to have to give several doses of lutalyse--and if she happens to be more that 100 days and the lutalyse doesn't work then it would be kind of too bad to assume that because there was no abortion that she isn't in foal--in view of that I can understand wanting to have an ultrasound done. Of course an US is only as good as the person doing the test...and reading the results. The next time a vet gets the results wrong won't be the first.

Thanks...

I'd rather waste money and know she isn't bred then not do the US and next year have a foal on the ground unexpected. If she's pregnant and due this year, she'd be too far along to abort. Atleast that is what I have been told. And if she is due this year, I want to know now so I can be prepared for the foal and be prepared in having numbers of people ready to call in the event of an emergency. She's too young and too small to just wait and see and hope everything is fine...

Thanks. I have used Lute on my goats but I am not going to try it on my horse, not with out involving my vet.

Good decision, hope you find she's not in foal.

I too thought Lutalyse was only effective in the first few weeks post breeding.

I think you've made a very wise decision! I do hope your filly is not in foal. She is very lucky indeed to have you!

I'm with nathan, Lutalyse is the answer here. Doesn't matter how far along she is.

I hope she's not bred, but I'm glad you're taking care of her.

However, if she is due this year, couldn't it be a real mess to have her abort a late term foal? I mean, it would almost certainly be malpositioned, right? That sounds like a dangerous situation if you ask me.

I do NOT think that Lutalyse is the answer. No matter how far along she is. i am not a vet and i dont think any one that has suggested it is,so therefore i do not believe you should suggest things like that as it could be dangerous. thats just my opinion....i do believe though that it is the vet and the owners decision on what to do with the mare if she is in foal for either this year or next.or if shes not, just get rid of her belly.was she getting fed alot of hay?it could be a hay gut...your filly is very special to have someone as caring as you. have you felt around on her belly to see if you feel anything? *Good Luck*

Once you have the ultrasound you will know which route to take. If she is in foal for this year then yes it is too late to give lutalyse. If she is in foal but it is still early on your vet will instruct you as to what to do. Lutalyse is a prostaglandin (Prostaglandin F-2 alpha) that causes luteolysis or destruction of the corpus luteum. Lutalyse works best in early pregnancy as the corupus luteum is the main progesterone secreting body at this point, as the embryo grows, different mechanisms come into play such as the endometrial cups (they occur around day 35) and placenta which further the production of progesterone to maintain the pregnancy. After this point it may be necessary to give more than one or two doses and heat cycles may be a bit wonky for a 4-5 months. (which is fine in her case) If she is in foal for this year I would really not reccomend aborting the foal.

Hopefully that helps a bit!

Thank goodness she has you!

Stick to your guns here and do the ultrasound, if you try to abort her you could lose her very easily, it is imperative to know exactly how far gone she is.

Lutalyse, as the people suggesting it should well know, is not efficient after 35 days (give or take) it also has a LOT of side effects and I for one would never use it again!!

Why would you want to induce what could be a late term abortion? The foal could be nowhere in position?

Well vet just called. Cant do the ultrasound b/c she;s too small. he has to use his hand/arm to go in on them...he doesn't have whatever the thing is called...

and there's no one around here that does except possibly one vet and there's no way i'm wasting my money on a good for nothing worthless idiot. Dealt with her before, never will again. GRR.

So I'm getting ready to draw blood and get it sent today. So I'll know Aug. 7th.

Oh dear, always a catch in the plan! If your vet is small enough, I would also have her palped. I have heard of blood tests that were not accurate either. At least then you will have two answers to depend on! Good grief, poor little gal. You are a wonderful owner and your filly is lucky to have you! Kudos to you for your actions and sensible decisions! I hope things work out ok and she is NOT pg!

OMG, just looked at her pics in the other post and yes, her belly is HUGE. I am hoping she was too young to cycle yet..... You have your work cut out for you on this project!
