White Rocks, Black Australorps, cornish, silver laced wyandottes, speckled sussex, rhode island red, barred rock, black giant, araucana, buff cochin, egyptian fayoumis, golden laced wyandottes, I think thats it!! Most of them are the black australorps and white rocks and cornish.

Now I just pray that we don't have a storm that knocks the power out, if that happens I will need to put them in tubs and in the camp trailer with the propane heater on :no:

If you get Geese be prepared for trouble- I have had some really REALLY nasty Geese, especially the Embden crosses.

I found the Brecon Buffs were really nice, gentle geese- and I had a Toulouse Goose that was a hoot- really heavy and ponderous, but the Greylag crosses I had were the best for just about everything- they were good guards in as much as they made a racket, they could fly quite well so could escape danger- one of them cleared a line of trees!!!- and they laid well and, dare I suggest- made good eating too!!!

Those chicks are beautiful- were they sexed??

You are going to have a rainbow flock there!!

I replied, well, I need R.I. reds, barred rocks, Buff orpingtons, black giants and Aucannas. And don't forget the bantams. I NEED more bantams.

So when you ask "What was I thinking", I can tell you what you weren't thinking.......in about 6 months, you'll have more eggs than you know what to do with.

Oh darn you! You've made me all itchy to order our spring chicks and I promised hubby I wouldn't this year. He wants to get pheasant chicks and I love my chickens. I sure can pick out those auracana chicks - they stick out like a sore thumb. Our babies we raised up last fall just started laying some pale pink eggs. When Sophie and I fed them the other morning she was so excited and had to announce, "The Easter bunny was here." I had the hardest time explaining that they were real eggs. When she finally got it she kept saying, "oh thank you chickens, thank you!". I'll never be without chickens again and chick time is my favorite time. I love seeing what the different ones grow up as. We had buff orpingtons, new hampshire reds and auracanass in the last batch, but next time I think we'll order one of those collections where you don't know what you're getting and the hatchery puts it together. Just for fun! Enjoy your chicks!

and will probably have to have them flown in because they are hard to find

I already called them about they auracunas and americanas BUT they told me they can't ship them directly to me from the U.S. I guess because of the "avian flu" thing. They told me to get a post office box # in the U.S. (in a U.S. town close to me) and then I would have to pick them up. Because they will cross the border they will need a vet certificate which they will do for me and I would just have to drive and get them. I am only 35 minutes or so from the U.S. border but it seems like such a scenario to get them. I thought it might be easier to have them shipped from Alberta and pick them up at the Ottawa airport, lol. My husband will think I have really lost it, having chicks flown in, ROFLMAO.

My kids with their 4H group are incubating eggs and hatching out chicks and then doing a project on it, so the kids are excited and gettting involved too!

Yes the chick were sexed, all but the cornish.

I get my chicks from Murry Mcmurry. They are pretty good.

My daughter is also in 4H and a lot of them are her projects.

Last year at acution she got $464.00 for three chickens :new_shocked:

Never thought there was any money in chicks I just like having hens around and all the benefits they bring.

Last year I got some muscovy ducks and they are a hoot!!! I had 6 but unfortunately a racoon got at three of them and of course we had named all of them and my grandaughter was just devastated at the loss of 3 of them. We have 3 left, one of which is a drake and HUGE. They are all extremely friendly, I can pick all of them up in my arms even though they are large, well the male is. They play with the dog, they like to groom him, lol, he is a golden retriever. My husband keeps threatening to have them for dinner :new_shocked: because when they are out they ALWAYS come to the house and up on our deck which is a pain because I keep having to pressure wash the deck!!! They sure love their swimming pool too. I think they are alot of fun to have around and the bonus is they eat bugs (they love flies)!!! As I said this year I plan on getting some araucana or some americanas but I won't tell hubby till they get here. I guess I will be the one building the "hen" house. I did hear however that the males in that species can be quite protective and nasty, that is the only problem with them.

My daughter is in 4H and poultry is her animal project. During the fair in August she shows some of her chickens and also has a pen of three layers or three meat chickens that go to auction at the end of the fair.

The buyers bid so much per pound for the three birds. Sometimes I wonder if the buyers realize that they are paying by the pound and not by the bird.

Last year was a supper year for all the kids at the fair that sold animals.

Pigs go over $1000.00 and cattle are high also.

I don't remember what sheep and rabbits went for.

I think you get a better return on the poultry myself.

Once a turkey went for $800.00. :new_shocked:

Last year two ducks $600.00.

For a small depressed town the buyers at the fair really come through for the kids at auction.

Of course 4H is not just about selling your animals at fair but it sure puts a smile on my daughters face when that hammer goes down.

She also does bread making, cake decorating, knitting, crafts, jewelry making, and other things that come up. It helps that I enjoy going to these things to. Well I don't like the knitting.

I did a market lamb one year in high school, and got something like $450... We had local buisnesses bidding and buying. I dunno what they did with the animals Pigs were by far the highest $$, and if I'd stayed in school, I had intended on doing a pig for my next market animal. We only had a choice of pig or sheep in my FFA group. We also showed one of the FFA club's sheep (they didn't go through auction, just show).
